Lynette van Tonder

Lynette van Tonder

My creative process is informed by a journey of searching for identity within the South African landscape. This journey subsequently leads to discovery, constructing and deconstructing, creating room for error, course correction and then coaxing a collective thread or voice to emerge. I confront Atelophobia - the extreme fear of imperfection, by giving the art medium and process space on my creative stage, in an attempt to create organic, authentic beauty from seeming chaos.

Mark-making is integral to my art practice and will often include meditative processes such as sewing and mapping to track this journey of discovery for both the artist and viewer. Drawing, painting, printing, cartography, scratching and stitching are fused to assemble expressionistic artworks mostly in mixed media.
